Janice Mann and the LilacTreeGrowing up as a sixth generation Canadian, I felt out of touch with my cultural roots. I was always fascinated by Ireland and Scotland and England, but it wasn't until much later in life that I found out why. After contracting the family history bug from my mom I was delighted to find out that this Canadian-grown girl had some serious Irish roots (with a healthy measure of English and Scottish origins as well). After finally accepting that the family history bug was incurable, I decided to pursue a career in genealogy specializing in Irish, as well as Canadian , English, and Scottish records.
After moving to Ireland in 2018 I've been able to learn even more about Irish history and genealogy and have had the pleasure of working with one of Ireland's top genealogists Nicola Morris at Timeline Genealogy. I've even completed research for the television program Who Do You Think You Are. It's a dream that actually came true! |
Why the LilacTree? |
What does a lilac tree have to do with genealogy?
It turns out that the lilac tree came to Canada in the baggage of early settlers. And much like the settlers themselves, the lilac tree has become a part of Canada. And on a more personal note, my grandfather, a man who I was very close to as a young girl and who sparked my interest in history and trees, died of natural causes one day in June beneath a lilac tree. A beautiful and peaceful end, forever linking him with the lilac tree (and LilacTree Genealogy). |
Janice researched my Irish and Canadian ancestors and made them come alive for my family. She provided an incredible amount of source documentation, but also wove the information into a wonderful story written for my daughter. Her passion and enthusiasm for this work is unparalleled. She won't just track down names and dates and stick them in a family tree - she'll get to know the people behind the data, and she'll contextualize it with her wealth of knowledge on Irish history and geography. Prepare to meet your ancestors and be amazed by their stories!
